The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is unprepared for the 2027 general elections, citing a lack of a solid structure to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike made the remark during a live media session in Abuja on Friday, where he criticized the internal workings of the PDP and expressed skepticism about the party’s readiness for the upcoming polls.
“The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious,” Wike said. “For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? You don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class. That is the situation of the PDP.”
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a prominent member of the G5 group of dissenting PDP governors, has long been a vocal critic of the party’s leadership, particularly following the outcome of the 2023 general elections. His comments have reignited discussions about the lack of cohesion within the opposition party, as well as its strategy to challenge the APC in future elections.
The remarks come amid efforts by opposition leaders to unite against the APC for the 2027 election cycle, although coalition talks have been stymied by conflicting interests among key stakeholders.
Wike’s criticism underscores the growing discontent within the PDP, which faces mounting challenges in building a unified and effective opposition strategy. As the political landscape evolves, the question of whether the PDP can regroup and prepare adequately for the 2027 elections remains uncertain.
