The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has launched a sweeping reorganization of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), aimed at restoring its operational effectiveness and internal security role.Speaking at a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the IGP ordered the immediate withdrawal of PMF personnel from unauthorized assignments, including private guard duties.According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stressed the need to reposition the PMF to align with its original purpose as the elite tactical unit of the Nigeria Police. The PMF, he noted, was established to respond swiftly to riots, emergencies, and violent threats—not to serve as escorts or guards for VIPs.IGP Egbetokun voiced concern over the misuse of PMF officers in non-core roles, saying it has diminished the unit’s operational strength. To fix this, he announced a number of reforms. These include quarterly ethics and professionalism training, the deployment of fully equipped, combat-ready units across all Squadrons, and strict accountability for PMF Commanders.Commanders have been directed to lead with discipline, ensure continuous training, and uphold respect for human rights. The IGP also revealed plans to roll out new leadership strategies and capacity-building programs that reflect global security standards. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support and acknowledged the role of international partners in enhancing the PMF’s technical skills and training.Urging all Squadron Commanders to view the reforms as both a professional duty and a moral obligation, IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to protecting lives, property, and national peace.
