Pro-Fubara Protest Erupts in Rivers as Supporters Demand Governor’s Reinstatement

Date:

Hundreds of supporters of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, staged a protest on Tuesday, calling for his immediate reinstatement amid ongoing political unrest in the state.

Dressed in black and wielding placards bearing slogans such as “Together we stand for Governor Sim Fubara,” “We want back our Governor, we all voted for,” and “Governor Fubara is the pride of Rivers People,” the demonstrators gathered at Aggrey Road in the Old Port Harcourt Township before marching through the streets.

The demonstration marks the latest in a wave of pro- and anti-government protests that have rocked the state since March 18, when President Bola Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State. Alongside Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu and members of the state’s House of Assembly were also suspended.

While full details surrounding the suspension remain unclear, tensions have continued to escalate, with political observers warning of deepening divisions within the state’s leadership and growing concern among residents over the future of governance in Rivers.

The protest underscores the strength of local support for Fubara, who has remained a central figure in the state’s political scene since taking office in 2023.
