HURIWA Slams N10bn Presidential Villa Solar Project, Labels It Admission of Power Sector Failure

Date:

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly criticised the Bola Tinubu administration over its approval of a N10 billion solar power project for the Presidential Villa, describing it as a clear indication of the failure of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

During a media briefing on Tuesday, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the move exposed the incompetence of the Minister of Power and highlighted the unaffordable nature of electricity tariffs imposed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Distribution Companies (DisCos). According to him, the decision shows that even the government no longer trusts the national grid.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approved the solar initiative, drawing backlash from citizens who questioned the project’s timing and hefty cost. In response, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga defended the decision, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the White House in Washington, D.C., also uses solar energy—positioning the move as part of a global trend toward sustainability.

Still, HURIWA maintained that the comparison was misleading and called the initiative a “selfish expenditure,” especially when millions of Nigerians live without reliable electricity. “This project is not just poor leadership; it confirms that our national grid is unreliable,” the group said.

HURIWA also condemned the current electricity pricing model, branding the Band classifications a scam, and likening it to Hushpuppi-style fraud.

The planned solar system is intended to power key parts of the State House, including the President’s residence and administrative offices. Supporters argue it will enhance energy efficiency and reduce long-term costs, but critics insist the project’s N10 billion price tag is unjustifiable in light of Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.
