Segun Adewale, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Lagos State party chairman, has thrown his weight behind former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, Adewale described Atiku as the kind of leader Nigeria needs to address pressing economic and governance challenges. He rejected internal opposition within the PDP and argued that the former vice president’s experience positions him as the right person to lead the country forward.“He has been tested and has shown resilience. He is one of the few politicians with consistency and understanding of Nigeria’s complex political terrain,” Adewale said.The endorsement comes amid internal disputes within the PDP. Key party figures such as Bode George and Ayodele Fayose have urged Atiku not to contest again. George even went as far as calling for Atiku’s exit from the party, citing allegations of disloyalty, while Fayose has promised to oppose any future bid.Adewale, however, insisted that these calls are self-serving. “Anyone in the party saying Atiku should not contest is not working in the interest of Nigeria or the PDP. They are acting out of personal gain,” he stated.He criticized what he described as an internal sabotage of Atiku’s coalition efforts, warning that such disunity would only benefit the ruling party.“No single opposition party can defeat the APC alone. Not even Peter Obi’s Labour Party. Unity is key,” Adewale said.He also highlighted the need for electoral reforms, citing his own experiences of alleged manipulation in Lagos elections as evidence of a flawed system.“It’s not about popularity or performance anymore; it’s about fixing the system. We must act before 2027,” he urged.Adewale concluded by acknowledging widespread public frustration, noting that the country’s citizens are eager for real change and credible leadership.
