Nigeria currently leads the medal table at the ongoing African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius, after securing an impressive haul of seven gold, four silver, and one bronze medal.
Among the standout performers is Rafiatu Lawal, a 2022 Commonwealth Games champion, who dominated the women’s 59kg category by clinching all three available gold medals with poise and power. Similarly, Didih Onome proved her mettle in the 55kg division, also winning a clean sweep of gold medals.
Edidiong Joseph contributed significantly to the team’s success in the 73kg category, grabbing one gold and two silver medals. Meanwhile, Tuesday Emmanuel added two silver and one bronze to Nigeria’s tally, reinforcing the nation’s strong presence in the competition.
With two medal hopefuls, Omolola Matthew and Sarah Ovayioza, yet to complete their events, expectations remain high. Ovayioza is set to compete today, with Nigeria eyeing further glory before the championship concludes.
