Nigerian skit maker and musician, Carter Efe, has criticized the organizers of the Headies Awards for nominating the late singer Mohbad in the 17th edition of the event.
Mohbad, who tragically passed away in September 2023 under controversial circumstances, was nominated in two categories: Best Street-Hop Artiste of the Year and the Viewers’ Choice Award for his collaboration with Chike. His widow, Omowunmi, and his son received the posthumous honor on Sunday in Lagos.
In a video shared on social media, Carter Efe expressed his displeasure with the nomination, accusing the awards organizers of attempting to gain attention by using Mohbad’s name after his death. Efe pointed out that the Headies had never awarded Mohbad during his lifetime, only to recognize him after his passing.
He said in pidgin: “Why Headies dey misbehave now, them go dey nominate Mohbad? Wetin makes them nominate Mohbad? But when the boy was alive them no go give am o. Anything for the clout na him Headies go dey do.”
The late Mohbad’s death remains shrouded in mystery, and his posthumous recognition has sparked mixed reactions from fans and the entertainment community.
