Nigerian singer, Shallipopi, has expressed his frustration and vowed to boycott future editions of the prestigious Afrobeats award, The Headies, following a humiliating moment at the 17th edition held in Lagos on Sunday.
Shallipopi, who was a strong contender in the Next Rated category, lost the award to his frequent collaborator, Odumodublvck. He had hoped for a consolation when his song “Cast” was announced as the winner of the Best Rap Single of the Year. However, his excitement turned to disappointment when, upon receiving the award, the presenter merely offered a handshake, as organizers reportedly ran out of plaques midway through the ceremony.
Taking to his X page on Monday, Shallipopi vowed not to participate in the event again. He clarified that he didn’t even desire the Best Rap Single award, as he doesn’t consider himself a rapper. He further urged the organizers to give the award to the actual rappers in the category.
Shallipopi’s post read: “The next one if una see me make I bend. I nor go even lie for una sef, I nor want that award. Give the real rappers wey dey the category. Me, Shallipopi I nor be rapper.”
The incident has sparked reactions from fans and industry insiders, with many sympathizing with Shallipopi’s sentiment.
