Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Manchester United took a commanding 3-0 first-leg lead over 10-man Athletic Bilbao in their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.
Casemiro gave United a surprise lead before Fernandes netted a penalty and added a third before half-time, punishing Bilbao after Daniel Vivian’s red card swung the match. With the win, United are now firm favourites to reach the final—set to take place at Bilbao’s own San Mames stadium.
Despite being pushed to their limits in the early stages by a passionate home crowd and relentless Athletic attack, United weathered the storm. Alex Berenguer and Inaki Williams went close for the hosts, but United struck first against the run of play. Defender Harry Maguire surged forward and crossed for Casemiro, who headed home.
Moments later, a crucial turning point arrived when Vivian hauled down Rasmus Hojlund in the box and was sent off. Fernandes calmly dispatched the resulting penalty, silencing the San Mames faithful.
Just before the break, Fernandes latched onto Manuel Ugarte’s clever backheel to slot in a third goal, putting the tie nearly out of sight. Noussair Mazraoui struck the crossbar soon after, as United threatened to add a fourth.
Athletic fans were left frustrated by referee Espen Eskas, especially after Maroan Sannadi was denied a foul when challenged by Maguire late in the game.
Though United couldn’t extend their lead in the second half, they comfortably controlled proceedings, with Casemiro and Fernandes dictating the tempo. The result puts Champions League qualification firmly within reach for United, who are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.
The second leg takes place at Old Trafford next Thursday, where United will look to finish the job and book a final showdown with either Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt on May 21.
