Popular Nigerian actress-turned-politician Funke Akindele has announced her intention to return to politics, following her 2023 election loss.
Akindele, who served as the running mate to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Abdulazeez Adediran in Lagos State, made the revelation during the inaugural live edition of the WithChude podcast. The PDP duo was defeated by the incumbent, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
After the loss, Akindele deleted all politically related posts from her social media, sparking speculation about her future in politics. However, in her recent interview, she confirmed her resolve to remain politically active.
“I need to support. I need to give back. That’s why I went into politics,” she explained. “I learnt that you have to be bold, courageous, and strong. What would be would be. Fear will only put you in a place.”
She added that her political journey has deepened her understanding of governance and inspired her through the example of women like Abike Dabiri. “When I want to speak, I speak with statistics and data. So, I’m glad that I went into politics. And ask me if I am going to do it again? Oh, yes.”
Her declaration has been met with mixed reactions, with some commending her resilience and others expressing curiosity about her next political move.
