ENUGU – The Labour Party (LP) suffered another major setback in Enugu State on Thursday as federal lawmakers Dennis Agbo (Igboeze/Udenu) and Mark-Chidi Obetta (Igboeze South/Nsukka) defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside Nsukka West State Constituency representative Malachi-Okey Onyechi.
Their defection follows closely on the heels of recent moves by LP chieftains Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo, and 2023 LP governorship candidate Chijioke Edeoga, who all rejoined the PDP in recent weeks.
The lawmakers, who originally left the PDP for LP ahead of the 2023 general elections, returned to their former party at an event held at the PDP Secretariat in Enugu.
Onyechi expressed joy at reuniting with the PDP, praising Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, particularly for instituting N2 billion in grassroots projects spread across Enugu’s 260 political wards.
Obetta cited visible development in transportation, education, healthcare, and hospitality as reasons for his return. “Enugu State will achieve more if everyone partners with Governor Mbah,” he added.
Agbo, meanwhile, praised his constituents for their support and boldly declared that the LP no longer had political footing in the state. He commended Governor Mbah’s leadership and called for his re-election in 2027.
PDP Chairman in Enugu, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, welcomed the defectors, stating their return marks an end to the political turbulence of 2023. “The tsunami is over, and 2027 will be seamless,” he declared.
