Guardiola: This Has Been My Toughest Season in Management

Date:

MANCHESTER — Pep Guardiola has described the current campaign as the most difficult of his 16-year managerial career, as Manchester City’s Premier League title defence faltered and they exited the Champions League prematurely.

Despite a track record of near-unbroken success at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City, the Spaniard admitted that the challenges this season have been unlike anything he has previously faced.

City’s dip in form began in late October, ending hopes of a fifth consecutive league title and culminating in a Champions League knockout phase defeat to Real Madrid. Speaking ahead of City’s trip to relegated Southampton, Guardiola acknowledged the emotional and tactical toll of a season marked by setbacks.

“It’s been the most difficult, that’s for sure,” the 54-year-old said. “It’s been more demanding — much more. When you don’t win, it’s more demanding emotionally, in preparation, and in the general mood.”

Injuries, particularly to key midfielder Rodri, combined with individual dips in form, have contributed significantly to the team’s struggles. Guardiola did not shy away from responsibility. “I didn’t find the way to let them feel comfortable and win the games,” he admitted.

Still, Guardiola pointed out that City are not without hope. They remain in the hunt for the FA Cup and could still secure a top-five finish, along with the Club World Cup later in the year. “Even with that, it could be worse. We didn’t give up,” he added.

City will now aim to finish the season strongly and secure Champions League qualification — a goal Guardiola describes as “a big, big prize.”
