Some residents of Rivers State have expressed discontent over the recent statements made by suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of relinquishing his responsibility to uphold democratic principles. Fubara’s declaration on Sunday, where he stated that he is not desperate to be reinstated as Governor and advised his supporters to adopt a peaceful approach to the political situation, has sparked mixed reactions.
The Coordinator of the South-South Elders Forum, Anabs Saro-Igbe, emphasized that the issue now transcends Fubara, asserting that the situation has become a “Rivers State matter.” According to Saro-Igbe, Fubara cannot unilaterally decide on the future of the State’s leadership, as it is ultimately the people of Rivers who should have a say in who governs them.
Resident Emmanuel Moses also voiced his frustration, criticizing Fubara for making the situation about himself. He argued that the struggle was for the protection of democratic principles and Nigeria’s sovereignty, not for Fubara’s personal gain. Moses described Fubara’s remarks as an insult to the people of Rivers and Nigerians who fought for the preservation of democracy.
However, Kola Bello suggested that Fubara should consider stepping down voluntarily to avoid further tension, expressing concerns about potential intimidation. Mrs. Agnes Fubi also voiced fears that the progress made under Fubara’s administration could be undermined if the situation continues.
Meanwhile, Fubara’s supporters appear less enthusiastic, with some expressing disappointment over his recent comments. On the other hand, those aligned with the camp of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister have continued to demand Fubara’s resignation without delay.
