In a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has filled three key vacancies in its National Working Committee (NWC).
During a recent meeting presided over by National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the NWC appointed Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Mr. Hussani Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary. The appointments were made in line with Article 12.5 of the party’s 2022 amended constitution and with the mandate of the party’s National Convention.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, who confirmed the trio had been duly and validly appointed.
The SDP State Chairmen’s Forum, led by Femi Olaninyi, expressed support for the new appointees, describing the move as a sign of the party’s continued progress. The forum congratulated the new NWC members and praised the national leadership for selecting individuals with strong credentials to drive the party forward.
“We encourage the new appointees to enhance collaboration and utilise their extensive experience for the party’s development,” the forum said. It also reaffirmed confidence in the leadership of the national chairman, describing him as wise, capable, and selfless in steering the party’s direction.
Senator Ugochukwu Uba, from Anambra State, is a scholar and former public servant who served under the SDP administration of Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992. He was also part of the Centre for Democratic Studies during the Babangida administration.
Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, from Gombe State, previously served as the SDP’s pioneer National Secretary and was its 2011 governorship candidate. He also led the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) as its first Director-General and chaired the party’s 2011 convention planning.
Mr. Hussani Ado Bello, from Kano State, is a chartered accountant and retired civil servant. He is a former Kano SDP chairman and previously led the SDP State Chairmen’s Forum. He now works as a finance and tax consultant and public relations strategist.
The party views these appointments as a step toward building a stronger platform as it prepares for the 2027 polls.
