Relegated Premier League club Leicester City has been charged with alleged financial breaches during their 2023-24 Championship season. The Foxes face accusations of violating Football League financial rules, with the case now referred by the Premier League to an independent commission for investigation.
Leicester, who will play in the Championship next season after being relegated from the Premier League, could face a points deduction if found guilty of breaching the regulations.
A Premier League spokesperson said:
“Following an Arbitration Tribunal’s decision concerning jurisdiction, Leicester City FC has now been referred to an independent Commission for alleged breaches of the EFL Championship Profit and Sustainability Rules for Season 2023/24, and the club’s obligation to provide full, complete and prompt assistance to the Premier League in response to the League’s enquiries.”
The Football League confirmed that an investigation began following the March 2024 financial submissions. As per regulations, jurisdiction passed to the Premier League after the 2023/24 season concluded due to the club’s promotion status at the time.
“We will now await the outcome of the Premier League proceedings,” the EFL added.
In response, Leicester City stated their intent to cooperate fully with the Premier League’s inquiry now that jurisdiction has been established for the financial year 2024.
Earlier in the season, Leicester successfully appealed to prevent the Premier League from charging them for breaching profit and sustainability rules during their 2022-23 top-flight campaign. The club argued the Premier League lacked jurisdiction as they were competing in the Championship during that period. A tribunal sided with Leicester, overturning the Premier League’s challenge.
Leicester said:
“The club is pleased that it successfully defended the Premier League’s challenge to the Appeal Board decision in relation to the PSR assessment period ending FY23, which was the main focus of these proceedings.”
This latest financial charge adds to an already difficult season for Leicester, who finished third-bottom and face uncertainty over manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future. The Foxes have managed just six wins from 37 league games and will close the season with a match against Bournemouth on Sunday.
