Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has decried the rising insecurity in Borno State, urging the Federal Government to act swiftly.
Obi expressed particular concern over the worsening security situation in the Marte area, calling it “unsettling” and urging reinforcements to support troops on the ground. He praised Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his dedication to restoring normalcy by staying with residents in the troubled region.
Meanwhile, the South-West East and North Initiative (SWENON) has called on traditional and religious leaders to play a more active role in fighting insecurity nationwide. SWENON Chairman Dr. Samuel Jenfa highlighted the need to overhaul recruitment in the police and military, improve training, and remove corrupt officers.
Governor Zulum expressed excitement over the massive turnout of residents who participated in a day of prayer and fasting to end terrorism and kidnapping in the state. The exercise aimed to seek divine intervention for lasting peace in Borno, the North-East, and Nigeria as a whole.
Zulum’s spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, confirmed the strong participation of both Muslim and Christian faithful in the prayers, reflecting widespread support for peace efforts in the region.
