President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Abia State on Friday, May 23, 2025, has been postponed indefinitely due to unforeseen circumstances, the state Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu, announced at the state executive council meeting on Monday.
The President was expected to commission the newly reconstructed 6.3-kilometre Port Harcourt Road in Aba, a major infrastructure project completed by the Governor Alex Ortiz administration with Julius Berger Construction Company after over 25 years of dilapidation. Additionally, Tinubu was to officially launch the $1.3 billion Medical City at Mba Asaa, Isiala Ngwa Local Council—a landmark project spanning 200 hectares and featuring advanced medical facilities including a helipad. Health Commissioner Prof. Enoch Uche described it as a bold initiative realized through international partnership.
Kanu did not provide a new date for the President’s visit but indicated it could take place next month, in June. However, the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, will proceed with her visit on the original date, during which she will be hosted by Abia State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti. The First Lady will officially launch the Renewed Hope Agenda targeting vulnerable groups.
Regarding Governor Otti’s mid-term anniversary celebrations, initially planned to be low-key, Kanu revealed a three-day event from May 25 to 29 with several activities. Aba residents will hold an open public carnival on the reconstructed Port Harcourt Road on Friday, May 23.
The anniversary events include a church service on Sunday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m., a special state executive council meeting on Monday, May 26, and visits by the governor’s wife to orphanages, followed by celebrations with children on Tuesday, May 27.
On Wednesday, May 28, a lecture will be delivered by former Finance Minister Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu. The celebrations will conclude with a state broadcast by the governor and festivities at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Thursday, May 29.
