LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has successfully rescued two persons abducted by gunmen last Thursday at the Ijede Creekside area in Ikorodu. The victims were freed unhurt late Sunday night following a coordinated rescue operation involving police tactical teams, local vigilantes, and hunters.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday. He said the police received a distress call around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, alerting them to gunshots in the Ijede Creekside settlement.
“Acting swiftly, combined teams of more than 15 police tactical squads, detectives, conventional policemen, local vigilantes, hunters, and community members were immediately mobilised to the scene,” Hundeyin said.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that two residents of the creekside settlement had been attacked and kidnapped by unidentified gunmen, who escaped through the surrounding creeks and forest.
Hundeyin noted that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, ordered an elaborate rescue operation. Security personnel and local collaborators were strategically deployed to block all possible escape routes around the creeks and forests.
Their efforts paid off when, at about 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, the victims were safely rescued and reunited with their families.
The police, alongside local security groups, are continuing search operations in the area to apprehend the fleeing suspects and prevent future incidents.
Hundeyin praised the courage of the officers and the swift cooperation from local vigilantes, hunters, and residents, saying their involvement was critical despite the tough terrain.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting all residents and urged the public, particularly those in vulnerable areas like Ijede creek, to remain vigilant and security conscious.
