Felix Agu Embraces Nigerian Heritage After FIFA Clearance to Join Super Eagles

Date:

Werder Bremen full-back Felix Agu has officially pledged his international future to Nigeria, expressing joy at the opportunity to reconnect with his roots.

Agu, who has been called up to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Unity Cup, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in London that he is thrilled to be cleared to represent Nigeria. He described the development as a “great feeling” and a proud moment for his family.

The 25-year-old, born in Germany to a Nigerian father, was recently cleared by FIFA after the German Football Federation confirmed he had never played an official match at senior or junior competitive levels. His only previous international experience was two friendly appearances for Germany’s U21 team in 2019.

“It is a great feeling to represent Nigeria, such a big country, and like I said before, it is to connect with my Nigerian roots from my father’s side,” Agu said.

With 22 appearances and three goals for Werder Bremen in the 2024/2025 Bundesliga season, Agu’s performances have attracted attention. His speed, versatility, and tenacity are expected to boost the Super Eagles’ defence.

The young defender spoke fondly of his welcome to the Nigerian squad, praising the warm atmosphere and camaraderie after two training sessions. He added that he is eager to contribute to the team and hopes to win trophies for Nigeria.

Agu also shared his admiration for Nigerian football legend Jay Jay Okocha, saying he looks up to the former midfield maestro. Beyond football, Agu’s love for Nigerian culture includes music from Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Davido, and traditional dishes like jollof rice and plantain.

Looking ahead to the highly anticipated friendly clash against Ghana, Agu said, “It is beyond a friendly game because of the rivalry. We have prepared well, and I hope we have a good game against them.”
