Manchester United are set to land Brazil international Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers after activating his £62.5 million ($85 million) release clause, British media reported on Wednesday.
The deal marks the beginning of a major squad overhaul under new boss Ruben Amorim, following United’s worst league campaign in over half a century. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and missed out on European football after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
According to the BBC, United will pay the transfer fee in three instalments over two years after Wolves rejected a five-year payment proposal.
Cunha, 26, was a standout performer for Wolves last season, netting 17 goals to help them narrowly avoid relegation. Despite finishing level on points with United, Wolves trailed them only on goal difference.
The Brazilian forward had long hinted at a summer exit, telling The Guardian in March: “I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
In addition to Cunha, United are reportedly preparing a move for Ipswich striker Liam Delap. ESPN reports that the club is ready to meet the 21-year-old’s £30 million release clause. Delap scored 12 Premier League goals last season, but is expected to leave following Ipswich’s relegation.
Chelsea are also said to be monitoring Delap’s situation closely.
