A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok influencer Murja Kunya to six months in prison for abusing the Naira currency.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Directorate, secured the conviction before Justice Simone Amobeda on Wednesday.
Kunya was arrested after videos showed her spraying Naira notes in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, an act that violates the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act prohibiting abuse and mutilation of the currency.
Initially arrested in January 2025, Kunya was granted administrative bail but absconded ahead of her court appearance. After weeks of investigation and surveillance, EFCC re-arrested her on March 16, 2025.
She was arraigned on May 20, 2025, pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge, leading to her sentencing.
