The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, claiming at least 21 lives and destroying property worth millions of naira.
In a condolence message issued on Friday, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State during this difficult time.
“We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” AbdulRazaq stated. “We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government.”
The forum also acknowledged the prompt response of the Niger State Government and its coordination with emergency agencies to provide relief to the victims.
AbdulRazaq emphasized that the disaster highlights the growing impact of climate change, calling for stronger efforts in disaster preparedness and response. “This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” he said.
He pledged the forum’s commitment to working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to strengthen response mechanisms and preventive measures.
The NGF concluded its message by praying for the families of the victims and urging citizens to support ongoing government efforts to manage and mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters.
