Real Madrid Sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on Long-Term Deal

Date:

Real Madrid have completed the signing of England international Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, securing the right-back on a contract that runs until 2031.

The Spanish club confirmed the transfer on Friday, revealing they paid a fee to bring in the 26-year-old ahead of his contract expiry so he can feature in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold, a product of Liverpool’s academy, made 352 appearances for his boyhood club, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. He added another league title in the 2023–24 season before calling time on his Anfield career.

The move reunites him with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who recently took over as Real Madrid manager following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite facing criticism and even boos from some fans during his final matches for Liverpool, support from figures like Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah helped rally the Anfield faithful to give Alexander-Arnold a proper send-off during the Premier League trophy celebrations last weekend.

At Madrid, he is expected to provide a much-needed boost at right-back, a position plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Dani Carvajal has been sidelined by a long-term knee issue, while Lucas Vazquez struggled defensively when forced into the role.

Alexander-Arnold, known for his elite passing and attacking prowess, could make his Real Madrid debut on June 18 when they face Al-Hilal in the Club World Cup in Miami.

In a related move, Real Madrid also signed Spanish centre-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth as they aim to reinforce a defence that was hit hard by injuries this past season.
