Chelsea Eye AC Milan’s Maignan Amid Goalkeeper Shake-Up

Date:

Chelsea have made an approach to AC Milan over the potential signing of French international goalkeeper Mike Maignan, according to reports.

The 29-year-old has just one year left on his current deal, and Milan—under financial pressure after failing to qualify for Europe—may opt to sell him this summer rather than risk losing him for free in 2026. Though a contract renewal had once seemed likely, Maignan’s future is now uncertain.

Chelsea had initially planned to assess their current goalkeepers—Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, and academy product Mike Penders—at the upcoming Club World Cup. However, Maignan’s potential availability has accelerated their search for a new No. 1.

Should a deal go through, Maignan would likely become the first-choice goalkeeper, casting doubt over Sanchez’s role. Petrovic, who impressed on loan at sister club Strasbourg and earned their Player of the Season award, is also pushing for a starting spot. His return to Stamford Bridge includes a wage increase, though his new contract reportedly features a release clause.

Filip Jorgensen, a £20 million signing last summer, is expected to remain in the squad.

Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to monitor Burnley’s James Trafford, though Newcastle United are currently leading that race.
