Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party (LP) has issued a clarion call to opposition leaders across the country, urging them to put aside personal ambitions and internal divisions to unite and offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Global Award and Dinner Night held in Abuja on Monday, LP’s Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, emphasized that the real threat to opposition success is not external sabotage, but internal disunity.
Represented by her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senator Usman noted that while the APC has used state apparatus to suppress dissenting voices, the greater danger lies within the opposition camp itself.
“Let me be brutally honest: while APC’s interference is real, it is not our greatest enemy. The opposition has often been its own worst enemy. Personal ambition, betrayal, and the hunger for quick power have made us fragile,” she said.
She called for a shift in focus from self-interest to collective vision, adding, “No external force can break us if we are not already breaking from within. It is time to stop acting like victims and start behaving like visionaries.”
Usman warned that Nigerians are not seeking a replica of the APC, but a coalition of leaders committed to national progress and integrity. She argued that true democracy cannot thrive under one-party dominance.
“A political system where one party dominates unchecked is a threat to democratic values. Nigeria needs a strong, united opposition that doesn’t just make noise—but inspires hope and delivers solutions,” she added.
Calling on the PDP, ADC, and other opposition parties, Senator Usman urged consensus-building around shared values, credible policies, and a unified vision for national development. She emphasized that the opposition’s role should go beyond criticism to inspiring Nigerians with substance, not just slogans.
She cited global examples where united opposition movements succeeded in restoring democratic balance, cautioning that Nigeria risks becoming a one-party state if opposition leaders fail to act.
“Even the APC should understand that democracy dies not with a bang, but with the silence of dissent. When there are no meaningful alternatives, the entire system loses legitimacy,” she warned.
“Not just ambition, but action. Not just talk, but transformation,” she concluded.
