As the 10th Senate nears its second year, its legislative direction, collaboration with the executive, and response to national challenges have attracted both praise and scrutiny. In this interview, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Senate spokesperson and representative of Ekiti South, outlines the Senate’s achievements, addresses criticisms, and shares its legislative priorities moving forward.
Progress So Far
Senator Adaramodu rated the Senate’s performance as progressive and people-centred, saying it has worked harmoniously with other arms of government. He dismissed criticisms that such collaboration made the legislature a “rubber-stamp” institution.
“Is it rubber-stamping to approve an education fund for indigent students or legislate a 300% minimum wage increase?” he asked. “If supporting beneficial policies makes us rubber-stamp, then it’s a good stamp for Nigerians.”
He also pointed to bold economic actions, including pushing the executive to begin repayment of the N30 trillion Ways and Means overdraft. On national security, he noted that while challenges remain, the Senate’s support for the armed forces has led to visible improvements.
“No significant portion of Nigerian territory is under insurgent control today. Security issues are global, but what matters is our response—and we have responded.”
Legislative Footprint
In nearly two years, the 10th Senate has considered over 600 bills, many of which have passed and resulted in the creation of institutions focused on AI, health sciences, and technical skills. It has also moved more than 1,100 motions and undertaken critical investigations, including one on the fuel subsidy regime.
On Emergency Rule in Rivers State
Adaramodu defended the Senate’s closed-door handling of the Rivers State emergency rule proposal, citing constitutional and procedural requirements.
“We debated extensively in executive session, as Senate Rule 134 mandates. The conclusion presented on the floor was the final resolution—not a rubber-stamp decision, but one reached after deep deliberation.”
On ₦2 Billion Allocation Allegations
The Senator dismissed claims that lawmakers received ₦2 billion each.
“Where is the proof? ZIP (Zonal Intervention Projects) allocations are clearly outlined in the national budget. No senator receives such money directly. We nominate projects across multiple communities. In my case, ₦200 million must be spread across six LGAs and 14 towns. It’s barely enough for basic infrastructure.”
He argued that misinformation often targets the National Assembly unfairly. “We’ve become the soft targets for the so-called romantic elite manipulating public opinion.”
Improving Public Awareness
To close the information gap, the Senate launched a dedicated magazine showcasing its work in youth development, gender equity, electoral reforms, and judicial improvements.
On Terrorism Sponsorship Claims
Addressing calls for the Senate to expose terrorism sponsors, Adaramodu challenged critics to provide evidence.
“Microphone politics won’t solve security issues. If there’s proof, present it to the authorities. We’ll follow up through oversight, but we can’t act on hearsay.”
Security Summit: A New Approach
On the upcoming National Security Summit, Adaramodu promised actionable outcomes.
“Unlike past conferences, this one will be different. We’re involving all stakeholders and implementing every credible recommendation. If it needs legislation, we’ll act. If it requires executive push, we’ll apply pressure.”
He concluded, “Everyone will be at the table this time—no one will be absent when decisions are made.”
