A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has called for the immediate commencement of impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu over alleged conflict of interest in the award of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway contract.
The demand was made on Saturday by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, a leading figure within the group, who accused President Tinubu of awarding the contract without due process to billionaire businessman Gilbert Chagoury, whom he described as a close associate of the president.
Oba Olaitan voiced his concerns while reacting to the commissioning of the 30-kilometre Phase 1, Section 1 of the coastal highway project. He alleged that the contract was not subjected to competitive public bidding and was structured to benefit Eko Atlantic City, a private development project linked to Chagoury.
“All President Tinubu is doing is building a road to his own Atlantic City,” Olaitan claimed. “That road was not advertised for public bidding. It is a national shame.”
He further criticised the National Assembly for what he described as inaction in the face of alleged executive misconduct, stating that a truly independent and active legislature would have initiated impeachment proceedings by now.
The Lagos-Calabar coastal highway has drawn significant public attention in recent weeks, with debates intensifying over its funding, route, and transparency in contract awarding. The presidency has yet to respond to the latest accusations by the Afenifere faction.
