ABUJA – Aliyu Audu, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Affairs, has resigned from his post, citing concerns about growing attempts to silence opposition voices and steer Nigeria toward a one-party state.
In a resignation letter dated June 8, Audu informed the President through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, of his immediate exit from the role.
In a follow-up public statement, Audu said his resignation was a matter of conscience rather than rebellion, distancing himself from what he described as efforts by the APC-led government to undermine democratic pluralism.
“Though I do not align with the PDP, I refuse to be used… to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state,” he stated.
He warned against political suppression reminiscent of past authoritarian regimes, stressing that democracy thrives on ideological competition, not domination.
Audu also criticised the alliance between President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying it undermines progressive values.
While backing Tinubu’s economic reforms, he said he could no longer defend the administration’s political direction, which he described as “politically reckless” and “spiritually dangerous.”
