A Lagos High Court has restrained the state electoral commission, LASIEC, from accepting candidates presented by the Labour Party’s Lagos executive committee allegedly appointed by Julius Abure for the July 12 local government elections.
Justice M.A. Savage issued the interim injunction on June 5 following a suit by Mr. Oluwasegun Sekonu, who is challenging the legitimacy of the Abure-backed state executive. The claimant relied on a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, in Senator Esther Nenadi Usman & Anor v. Labour Party & Anor, which nullified earlier court rulings that had favoured Abure’s leadership.
The court barred LASIEC from processing nomination forms or electoral documents submitted by the disputed state executive, citing the risk of irreparable harm and the urgency of the matter.
A motion on notice is scheduled for hearing on June 24, 2025.
