Cross River Assembly Suspends Bekwarra LG Chair Over Corruption Allegations

Date:

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Ms Theresa Ushie, for three months following allegations of misconduct and corruption.

The suspension came after lawmakers deliberated on a resolution passed by the Bekwarra Local Government Legislative Council on Tuesday, which accused the chairman of corruption, abuse of power, and other acts of misconduct.

In response, the Assembly constituted a committee to investigate the allegations.

Speaker of the House, Mr Elvert Ayambem, while speaking on the matter, cited Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025, as the legal basis for the suspension.

He announced that the Vice Chairman, Mr Egbung Odama, will assume leadership of the council in acting capacity during the suspension period.

The Speaker also urged the investigative panel to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry to ensure justice is served.

It would be recalled that similar impeachment attempts were made against Ms Ushie three months ago over similar allegations.
