President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, publisher of Vanguard newspapers, as he marked his 90th birthday on June 13, 2025.
In a statement celebrating the media icon, Tinubu described Amuka-Pemu, fondly known as “Uncle Sam,” as an elder statesman, a doyen of journalism, and a symbol of integrity and resilience in the media industry.
“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday,” the President said.
Amuka-Pemu began his journalism journey at Daily Times, later co-founding The Punch with the late Chief Olu Aboderin. In 1984, he established Vanguard, which has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers under his leadership.
Tinubu praised Amuka’s dedication and managerial strength in keeping Vanguard thriving despite challenges in the media landscape. He noted that Amuka’s leadership has left a lasting mark not only on journalism but also in Delta State and the South-South region.
“As part of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations, I conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON),” Tinubu added.
He urged young journalists to emulate the veteran publisher’s values and wished him continued grace and more years of impactful service to the nation.
