The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the detention of three police inspectors following allegations of extortion and misconduct.
The directive came after the officers were accused of forcibly searching a student’s phone and extorting him during a routine patrol. CP Orutugu, who personally interrogated the officers, condemned their actions and described the conduct as a disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force.
He further ordered the immediate commencement of internal disciplinary procedures against the three inspectors.
According to the police, the victim, Kamsi Okeke — a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka — approached the Commissioner in his office to report how the officers extorted him while he was returning to school in Onitsha.
In response, CP Orutugu launched an immediate investigation, identifying the officers involved and constituting a panel to probe the incident.
Speaking to Vanguard, Okeke praised the swift action taken by the police boss and expressed renewed confidence in the Force.
“I used to dread policemen,” he said. “But the decisive action taken by CP Orutugu has restored my trust in the Force. I’m grateful I had the courage to walk into his office after hearing about his open-door policy.”
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to accountability and professionalism, warning that any officer found engaging in abuse of office or corruption would be dealt with firmly.
He noted that misconduct not only tarnishes the image of the police but also undermines public trust and the effective implementation of law enforcement policies.
