LAGOS — Veteran Nollywood actor Ganiu Nofiu, popularly known as Alapini, has expressed deep regret for campaigning for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, citing growing economic hardship, insecurity, and lack of appreciation from the presidency.
In a candid interview on ‘African A-List’, Alapini revealed that he and over 100 other actors abandoned their work for two months to support Tinubu’s campaign, believing his past contributions in Lagos and the Yoruba movie industry made him a suitable candidate.
“We supported and committed ourselves to the campaign thinking our Messiah had come,” Alapini said. “We led the campaign genuinely for Nigerians’ well-being and not for personal gain.”
However, nearly two years into Tinubu’s administration, the actor lamented that their efforts had gone unacknowledged. “We were not compensated. Probably they are not yet in the right frame of mind to do so,” he said.
Alapini also questioned the philanthropic focus of the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, alleging a regional imbalance. “Seyi is running around the northern part of Nigeria to pay their hospital bills. Aren’t there sick people in Yoruba land too?” he asked. “How many hospitals has he visited in Yoruba land?”
The actor’s comments reflect growing discontent among supporters who feel sidelined amid worsening national conditions, despite their role in the president’s electoral victory.
