Uriel Oputa Slams Age-Shaming, Calls Aging a Privilege

Date:

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and entrepreneur Uriel Oputa has condemned the age-shaming of women, particularly by Nigerian men, describing it as disrespectful and ignorant.

In a recent Instagram video, Uriel questioned why a natural part of life would be used to ridicule women. She said it was an insult to God to use age as a weapon of discrimination, especially when it’s something everyone experiences.

Uriel said, “I posted a video and instead of learning something useful, what you get out of it is, ‘oh, you’re getting older,’ because you’re not smart enough to digest and use the concept that was taught to you to better your life. But what you hold on to is that you’re getting old.”

She added that ageing should be seen as a blessing, not a curse. “There is no shame in aging. Aging is a privilege. I’d rather grow old than be six feet under with regrets. Some people have all the money in the world and still wish they had one more day to breathe. Don’t mock what you cannot understand. One day, life will remind you,” she said.

The video sparked a wave of positive reactions online, with fans praising her confidence and message. One user, @dreamgirl_kaiyra, said, “Once you are a woman in your thirties they make it look like it is over. I’m 33 and I’m so loving this life God has given me. Not all 33 are alive.” Another, @chiomaad, added, “Ageing is a privilege. Imagine when you age in sound health—that is a blessing.”

Uriel’s message has resonated with many, reinforcing the view that growing older is something to be embraced, not mocked.
