LISBON, PORTUGAL – Nigeria’s Super Falcons held Portugal to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in an entertaining international friendly at the Estadio José Gomes on Monday night.
The match saw both teams showcase tactical discipline and attacking flair, though neither side could find a breakthrough.
The opening half was cagey, with both sides cancelling each other out. Portugal gained momentum after the 30-minute mark but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who pulled off two crucial saves to keep Nigeria level.
The Super Falcons posed threats of their own, with Francisca Ordega and Rasheedat Ajibade testing the Portuguese defence with their speed and creativity. Rinsola Babajide came closest in the first half for Nigeria but failed to convert a promising opportunity.
After the break, Nigeria nearly grabbed the lead when Toni Payne, teed up by Ajibade, fired wide from inside the box. Portugal replied with sustained pressure, but Nnadozie again stood firm with a vital save.
Coach Justin Madugu introduced Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Halimat Ayinde in the 60th minute to freshen up the squad.
Nigeria almost found a late winner in the 80th minute when Ordega struck the post. Moments later, Onumonu came close to scoring after another threatening delivery from the right wing.
With the draw, the Super Falcons maintain momentum as they continue preparations for upcoming international fixtures.
The team now turns its attention to their next friendly clash against arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Queens on Friday.
