Osun Council Crisis: Afenifere, Ozekhome Urge Tinubu, AGF to Uphold Rule of Law

Date:

OSOGBO — The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused former governor Gboyega Oyetola of deliberately setting a political trap that has triggered the lingering crisis over control of local councils in the state.

Speaking at the 46th edition of the Frontliners programme in Osogbo on Wednesday, PDP state chairman Sunday Bisi alleged that Oyetola’s decision to conduct a council election after losing re-election in 2022 laid the foundation for the current logjam.

Bisi noted that the election, which gave only a 60-day notice instead of the legally required 360 days under the Electoral Act, was conducted in violation of electoral guidelines. He described it as a calculated move to disrupt the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke and destabilise governance at the third tier.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and direct all parties to respect the rule of law to restore order.

Similarly, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has urged Tinubu to step in and end the political impasse. In a communiqué signed by its National Financial Secretary, Lanre Omisore, and Publicity Secretary, Adeyinka Akala, Afenifere called for a peaceful resolution and reaffirmed its support for the President’s renewed hope agenda. The group also dissociated itself from a faction led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mike Ozekhome has written to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), accusing him of enabling illegality by supporting the continued stay of sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) council officials.

In the letter dated June 23, 2025, Ozekhome urged the AGF to enforce court rulings that affirmed the legality of the February 22 council elections that produced 30 chairpersons and 332 councillors on the PDP platform.

He also condemned a March 26 directive by the AGF instructing the disbursement of council funds to the sacked APC officials, describing the move as unconstitutional.
