Alcaraz starts Wimbledon defence against Fognini

Date:

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will open his Wimbledon 2025 campaign against Italy’s Fabio Fognini, while world number one Jannik Sinner could face Novak Djokovic in a potential blockbuster semi-final, following Friday’s official draw.

Alcaraz, arriving at the All England Club on an 18-match winning streak — the longest of his career — is seeking to become only the fifth man in the Open Era to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles, joining legends Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Djokovic. The 22-year-old Spaniard holds a 2-0 career record over Fognini.

Top seed Sinner, still chasing his first Wimbledon crown, will begin his title quest against fellow Italian Luca Nardi. His route to the final may involve a highly anticipated showdown with Djokovic, who is seeded sixth — his lowest seeding at SW19 since 2018.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion and finalist every year since 2018, faces France’s Alexandre Muller in the opening round. He is also drawn to meet British No.1 and fourth seed Jack Draper in the quarter-finals. Draper will open against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez.

In the women’s draw, reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova returns to Centre Court against 2025 breakout star Alexandra Eala. Krejcikova, who missed the first five months of the season due to a back injury and recently withdrew from Eastbourne with a thigh issue, faces a stern test against the rising 20-year-old Filipino. Eala stunned the tennis world earlier this year by defeating Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek en route to the Miami Open semi-finals.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka opens against Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine. Sabalenka is aiming to reach her first Wimbledon final after two semi-final exits. Meanwhile, second seed Coco Gauff, fresh off her French Open triumph over Sabalenka, begins her campaign against Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, a finalist in Nottingham.

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday, June 30, and conclude on Sunday, July 13.
