CASABLANCA – Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a confident performance on Sunday, securing a 3-1 win over arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Queens in an international friendly match as both teams gear up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The encounter, played in Casablanca, saw Nigeria dominate proceedings after a quiet start. Ghana had the first clear chance in the 17th minute, but Doris Boaduwaa’s low strike went wide.
Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Chiwendu Ihezuo’s effort deflected past the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Moments before halftime, the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty, which star striker Asisat Oshoala calmly converted to double the lead.
The Super Falcons extended their advantage five minutes into the second half when team captain Rasheedat Ajibade slotted home Nigeria’s third with a composed finish.
Ghana thought they had found a lifeline in the 55th minute through Evelyn Badu, but her effort was ruled out for offside. Nigeria then made a triple substitution in the 56th minute, introducing Ifeoma Onumonu, Sikiratu Isah, and Esther Okoronkwo for Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale, and Ihezuo.
Despite several chances, Nigeria couldn’t add to their tally. Ghana eventually grabbed a consolation in the 88th minute through Alice Kusi, who converted from the penalty spot.
Both sides will now shift focus to WAFCON 2024, with Nigeria set to begin their campaign against Tunisia next Sunday.
