Rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has applauded the unification of key opposition figures under a new coalition that formally merged with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday night, describing it as a “long overdue but commendable step toward rescuing Nigeria’s democracy.”
The development, which has stirred political discourse nationwide, brought together prominent leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The coalition is being touted as a significant force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Adeyanju expressed hope that the move would offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), whose governance he described as “disastrous.”
“I’m proud of the opposition for finally coming together,” he said. “Special thanks to Atiku, Obi, and other top opposition leaders for setting aside personal ambition to make this happen. This is what they should have done in 2023. I hope Kwankwaso will also do same.”
He stressed that the opposition’s failure to unite in the past had contributed to the APC’s dominance and urged other influential figures who have yet to join the coalition to consider aligning for the sake of the country’s future.
