Enugu East Leader Warns Senator Chukwu Against Defection, Accuses Him of Poor Representation

Date:

A constituent and community leader, Prince Maxwell Ozoemena Nnamami, has written an open letter to Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, urging him to remain in the Labour Party (LP) and address what he described as glaring failures in representation.

Nnamami’s strongly worded letter comes amid growing speculation that the senator is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He cautioned that such a move would be seen as a betrayal of the people who voted for him under the LP platform following the tragic death of his brother, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, who was murdered days before the 2023 election.

“You were not voted into office because you were the most popular or most influential candidate,” Nnamami wrote. “You were voted for out of sympathy… That vote was a vote of grace, not entitlement.”

He recalled that the electorate rejected a prominent APC candidate in favour of Chukwu, believing that he would continue his late brother’s legacy. Nnamami expressed disappointment that the senator has failed to live up to expectations, citing poor legislative performance, lack of youth empowerment, and the absence of development initiatives.

“Even the road leading to your own house is a disgrace to your name and the Senate office you hold,” he lamented.

The letter accuses Chukwu of abandoning the people who supported him, saying, “You wore the Labour Party like a borrowed cloth… now you toss it aside like it means nothing.”

He warned that if the senator fails to return to the original mandate and deliver tangible results, constituents will respond with silence in 2027—“a silence louder than any campaign slogan.”

Reacting to the letter, Senator Chukwu, through his Chief of Staff Victor Chigozie, denied any defection plans and dismissed the circulating letter as “a deliberate act of misinformation aimed at misleading the public and causing unnecessary confusion.”
