The Supreme Court has indefinitely adjourned judgment in the legal dispute surrounding the Edo State Governorship Election.
The apex court announced the adjournment sine die—without specifying a date—after hearing arguments from all parties regarding the election that declared Senator Monday Obekpholo as governor.
Justice Garba Lawal, who presided over the proceedings, said a date for the judgment would be communicated to the concerned parties in due course.
The appeal was filed by Mr. Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Represented by senior lawyer Ken Mosia (SAN), Ighodalo urged the court to overturn Obekpholo’s victory and declare him the rightful winner, citing that he secured the majority of lawful votes.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi (SAN), opposed the appeal and called for its dismissal.
INEC argued that the appellants had earlier discredited the election as unlawful due to alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, and therefore could not now seek to benefit from the same process they condemned.
The electoral body also accused Ighodalo and the PDP of inconsistency in their legal claims and urged the court to dismiss the case for lack of merit.
