ABUJA — A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has described the emergence of a new political coalition as a welcome development for Nigeria’s democracy, calling it a necessary safeguard against authoritarianism.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Friday, Galadima said the formation of coalitions reflects the essence of democracy and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to freely associate and pursue collective political objectives.
“In politics, especially in a democracy, people are allowed to express their views — whether positive or negative,” Galadima said. “This coalition is one more dissenting voice, one more iron gate against dictatorship.”
He stressed that Nigerians must be free to associate with whoever they choose and that decisions about a politician’s relevance or future should be left to voters. “Only Nigerians can decide whether someone is expired, extinguished, refurbished, or rejuvenated,” he noted.
The NNPP stalwart urged Nigerians to support the coalition’s members, noting that under the Constitution, citizens have the right to congregate, assemble, and chart a new political direction for the nation.
Galadima drew parallels with developments in other democracies, particularly the United States, where, despite disagreements, public discourse remains vibrant. He emphasized the need for similar boldness in Nigeria.
“What is happening in this country, if not checked, could be dangerous. In America, even with strong leaders like Trump, the minority still had a voice. We need a similar robust democracy here,” he said.
He further criticised the lack of trust and independence among Nigeria’s three arms of government and called for reforms to restore confidence and accountability within democratic institutions.
“Even if you are in government, you should welcome this. People must be bold enough to speak their minds. The judiciary, legislature, and executive must function independently in an atmosphere of trust — which we don’t currently have,” Galadima added.
He concluded by wishing the new coalition success and urging all Nigerians to respect their constitutional right to form a political bloc.
