ZAMORA, SPAIN — Authorities in Spain say a formal update on the tragic crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, is expected in the coming days, as investigations continue into the high-speed accident that stunned the football world.
Spain’s Guardia Civil and traffic officials in Zamora province are examining critical details surrounding the early morning crash last Thursday, which saw the brothers’ £180,000 acid green Lamborghini Huracan veer off the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, close to the Portuguese border.
Key aspects under investigation include the vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash and identifying which of the two men was behind the wheel. Authorities acknowledged last week that the driver had not yet been conclusively identified.
The luxury supercar, capable of hitting speeds of 200 mph, is believed to have suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle — a possible trigger for the fatal loss of control. Photos from the scene show the crumpled front of the Lamborghini beside the road, with debris scattered near a crash barrier.
Alfonso Ibáñez, the provincial traffic chief in Zamora, is currently compiling accident data from that stretch of the A-52 motorway. The road has been described by local sources as “notoriously treacherous,” with a history of serious accidents linked to potholes, roadworks, poor maintenance, and wildlife crossings. Already in 2025, six lives have been lost on that same section, compared to 11 in 2024.
Just one day before the Jota crash, a 60-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a separate accident nearby.
Reports suggest the brothers were driving from northern Spain to Santander to board a ferry to the UK. Diogo, 27, had reportedly been advised not to fly due to recent lung surgery. The trip came shortly after his wedding to longtime partner Rute in Porto on June 22.
Andre Silva, 26, a professional footballer like his older brother, also died at the scene. The siblings were buried in their hometown of Porto on Saturday, with tributes pouring in from across the global football community.
The crash has left several unanswered questions, including the exact cause of the tyre failure, whether speed or road conditions played a larger role, and who was in control of the vehicle at the time. Investigators are using data from the crash site and vehicle diagnostics in an effort to reconstruct the final moments of the journey.
