LAGOS — Asa Asika, manager to Afrobeats superstar Davido, has said the genre could have achieved even greater global success if leading artistes like Davido and Wizkid had collaborated more frequently.
Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Asika drew a comparison between Afrobeats and Latin music, highlighting how consistent collaborations among Latin stars like J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Nicky Jam helped propel the genre to international prominence.
“Afrobeats would have been bigger if Davido, Wizkid, and the likes were collaborating,” Asika said. “I might be wrong, but the probability of Afrobeats being more successful and bigger is a thing. Our genre ticket values at international shows would be stronger.”
He urged Afrobeats artistes to prioritize unity and joint projects, stressing that the power of collaboration can significantly boost global appeal and commercial success.
Asika’s comments come amid ongoing conversations about the need for cohesion within the Afrobeats industry, where rivalry among top acts has often overshadowed potential collaborations that could elevate the genre.
