The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed claims that it is plotting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, saying it remains committed to peaceful and democratic processes.
Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, in response to a tweet by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga had alleged that opposition parties were plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government before the 2027 general elections.
Describing the allegation as “baseless and dangerous,” Abdullahi said it was a ploy to suppress opposition voices under the guise of national security concerns.
“We are not soldiers, we are politicians. We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots. When the time comes, we will present our solutions and an alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people,” Abdullahi said.
He criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for being intolerant of political opposition, despite once being the leading opposition party that gained power democratically.
“The APC now appears to find it strange that there is an opposition at all,” he added.
The ADC spokesperson called on President Tinubu to caution his aides against making unfounded claims that could heat up the polity ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also urged Nigerians to resist attempts to discredit or silence opposition parties, stressing that a vibrant opposition is vital for the health of the country’s democracy.
According to him, the ADC remains committed to building a better Nigeria through peaceful engagement and democratic participation.
