ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday presided over a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader defined by integrity, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.
The solemn gathering, which took place at the State House in Abuja, came just days after Buhari’s passing at the age of 82. His death triggered a national mourning period and a state funeral held in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15. Both President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were present at the funeral.
Reflecting on Buhari’s life and service, Tinubu lauded his contributions as a soldier, administrator, and two-term democratically elected president. He noted that Buhari’s leadership journey—from serving as military governor of the defunct North-Eastern State to heading the Petroleum Trust Fund and eventually the Nigerian presidency—was marked by commitment to national duty and personal integrity.
“President Muhammadu Buhari lived a life in full service to Nigeria and in fidelity to God,” Tinubu stated. “When many had lost hope that change was possible, he put his faith in the people.”
The president spoke warmly about their political alliance under the All Progressives Congress (APC), which led to Buhari’s historic election in 2015—ushering in Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power from one ruling party to another.
He praised Buhari’s modesty and statesmanship, noting that the former president did not seek to interfere in national affairs after leaving office. “He did not seek to command from the shadows,” Tinubu said.
While acknowledging that no leader is without flaws, Tinubu emphasised that Buhari would be remembered for his discipline, incorruptibility, and moral conviction. “He stood for justice and for the unity of this country,” he added.
President Tinubu extended condolences to Buhari’s widow, Hajia Aisha Buhari, their children, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss. He also commended the Inter-Ministerial Committee led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, for organising a dignified state funeral within 48 hours.
“We honour his service, reflect on his legacy, and pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Tinubu concluded.
