SDP Reaffirms Gabam as National Chairman, Slams Agunloye for Attempted Destabilisation

Date:

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as its duly recognised National Chairman, dismissing attempts by former Minister, Olu Agunloye, to challenge the party’s leadership and sow discord.

In a statement released on Friday by Lawal Ibrahim, media aide to the National Chairman, the party accused Agunloye and a “small group of individuals” of peddling misinformation and engaging in activities aimed at destabilising the party.

“The attention of the National Leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has been drawn to recent disturbing and misleading actions propagated by a small group of individuals whose sole aim appears to be the destabilization of our great party,” the statement read.

Describing Agunloye’s actions as a “campaign of misinformation, misrepresentation, and outright defiance,” Ibrahim insisted that Gabam remains the party’s only recognised chairman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said the party remains united and focused under Gabam’s leadership and has made significant strides, including the revitalisation of grassroots structures, enhanced national visibility, and promotion of social justice and integrity.

“Contrary to efforts by Mr. Agunloye and a few disgruntled elements to portray a divided house, the SDP remains united, focused, and strong under the legitimate leadership of Alhaji Gabam,” Ibrahim added.

The statement further dismissed a panel constituted by Agunloye as illegitimate and unlawful, calling it “an act of desperation” aimed at distracting from what it described as his “lack of credibility.”

Ibrahim also clarified that the party is not part of any political coalition, noting that any previous arrangements have long been dissolved. “Let it be made abundantly clear that the SDP is an independent political party. The issue of any supposed coalition is a matter of the past,” he stated.

The party called on its members and the public to disregard any misleading narratives and stand firm in support of its recognised leadership and core values.
