Chelsea FC defender, Tosin Adarabioyo, has expressed excitement over his maiden visit to Nigeria, a trip centred on grassroots football development and youth empowerment.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, the Nigerian-born player said he felt honoured to be in his country of origin for the first time. His visit coincides with the inaugural edition of the Tosin Adarabioyo Youth Cup — a tournament he initiated to discover and nurture young football talents across the country.
Adarabioyo described the project as a personal mission driven by his passion to contribute to Nigeria’s football growth, particularly at the grassroots level. He emphasised the critical role grassroots football plays in building a successful national football culture.
“It’s a great feeling to be in Nigeria. I’m hoping for a wonderful time with family while connecting with young footballers across the country,” he said.
The 26-year-old defender noted that reconnecting with his roots comes with a broader sense of responsibility, especially in empowering youths through sports. He expressed a desire to use his platform to mentor aspiring players and spotlight the value of discipline and dedication in football.
Adarabioyo highlighted the need for better investment in Nigerian football, stating that the sport now functions as a global industry that requires marketing, infrastructure, and long-term development strategies.
He said the Youth Cup would serve as a platform to scout future stars and identify areas for improvement in future editions. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with key football stakeholders in Nigeria to ensure the tournament’s continuity and growth.
The 2025 edition of the Tosin Adarabioyo Youth Cup featured four grassroots teams from Lagos: Team Lagos, 36 Lions, Seamoriow, and Mavlon. After a fiercely contested competition, Team Lagos clinched the trophy with a 1–0 victory over 36 Lions.
Adarabioyo praised the teams’ performances, commending the players for their discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship. He urged them to remain focused on their development and assured them that dedication and hard work would take them far.
He also expressed hope that the Youth Cup would grow into a national competition, promising continued support for initiatives that empower young Nigerians through sport and build sustainable football systems.
Adarabioyo’s visit signals a renewed connection between Nigerian footballers abroad and efforts to boost the local football scene.
