Super Falcons Visit Injured South African Star Salgado After WAFCON Semi-Final Clash

Date:

Some players of Nigeria’s Super Falcons have paid a compassionate visit to South African forward Gabriela Salgado, who sustained a serious injury during Tuesday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final in Morocco.

Salgado was stretchered off in the 88th minute of the tense encounter after suffering a horrific leg injury that left players from both sides visibly distressed.

Despite the emotional scenes, Nigeria sealed a 2-1 win thanks to a late goal from Gloria Alozie, securing their place in the final.

Following the incident, the South African Football Association confirmed that Salgado suffered a fracture to the mid-shaft of her left leg. She underwent successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year.

In a gesture of sportsmanship, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led a group of Nigerian players to visit Salgado in hospital on Wednesday. The injured forward was presented with a signed Super Falcons jersey during the visit.

“The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff, were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado,” the team said in a statement.

“We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, her family and close friends in our hearts, sending our deepest wishes for strength and resilience.”

The Falcons added that moments like these transcend rivalry. “The spirit of competition fades, and we are united in compassion and solidarity,” the statement noted, expressing full support for Banyana Banyana and Salgado’s recovery.

Nigeria will face host nation Morocco in Saturday’s final as they chase a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
