FG Launches N10m Loan Scheme for Tertiary Institution Staff, Boosts Education Budget

Date:

The Federal Government has introduced the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a loan scheme designed to improve the welfare and development of staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. The initiative, launched during a stakeholder engagement session in Abuja, allows eligible academic and non-academic staff to access up to N10 million, capped at 33.3 per cent of their gross annual salary.

According to a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, the scheme targets staff across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. It is aimed at enhancing financial stability, supporting professional growth, and improving the overall quality of life of education workers.

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu disclosed that his administration has allocated N3.52 trillion to the education sector in the 2025 national budget — a 61.47 per cent increase from the previous year. He said the move is part of efforts to improve infrastructure, expand student funding, and ensure broader access to quality education.

Tinubu made the remarks in a speech delivered on his behalf at the 54th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) by Prof. Madu Offor, Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. He emphasized the critical role of education in driving national progress, social stability, and innovation.

The President urged the graduating students to use their entrepreneurial training to contribute meaningfully to national development, adding that their education should serve as a tool for change under his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Also speaking at the event, the Chancellor of UNN, His Imperial Majesty, Dr. Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, called on the graduands to be champions of unity and proud ambassadors of the university.
